The Victoria Racing Club’s 8-day Spring Carnival, incorporating the Emirates Melbourne Cup, is one of the biggest events on the world horse racing calendar. For Tabcorp, it is a particularly important week on their calendar as novice punters line-up to place their “once a year” bet on the horses. Many of these novice punters would prefer to use their device (smartphone or tablet) to reasearch and place their bets using Tabcorp's online services and mobile apps.

3G networks typically become highly congested in packed stadiums at major event time – a sure recipe for a poor customer experience of smartphone applications. Tabcorp’s solution was to provide high speed pieWiFi access to their on-course customers, and therefore ensure they had a great experience connecting to the Tabcorp content and applications.

Tabcorp engaged PieNetworks to design and deliver a robust and scalable telco grade managed WiFi solution for the very popular Nursery & Carpark area at Flemington. Key requirements were for a secure service, high speed customer access to a specified list of web sites and hosted content, and detailed reporting of network traffic and customer activity levels. An especially challenging aspect of the exercise was to coordinate the installation and testing of the telco grade managed WiFi service at Flemington in amongst an enormous amount of on-site construction activity.

The pieWiFi service performed exceptionally well through the Spring Carnival, giving Tabcorp customers a tremendous betting experience on their WiFi enabled smartphone or tablet device. The customer feedback to Tabcorp was very positive, and was reinforced by the increasing usage of the service each racing day of the Carnival.

For Tabcorp, the investment in a secure high speed pieWiFi service has meant they have been able to deliver the best possible content and application experience to their customers when it counts.
